Definition

A point in a topological space is termed a generic point if it satisfies the following equivalent conditions:

  • Every nonempty open subset of the space, contains that point
  • The singleton subset comprising that point, is a dense subset

Generic points frequently occur in topological spaces arising in algebraic geometry.
