Statement

Suppose X is a topological space and consider closed subsets A1,A2,An of X such that there exist open subsets UiXi, such that the Ui are pairwise disjoint. Let A be the union of the Ais. Then the following natural map is an isomorphism:

Hq(X,XA)i=1nHq(X,XAi)

Particular cases

  • When X is a normal space, and all the Ais are pairwise disjoint, then the existence of Uis is guaranteed.
  • When X is a Hausdorff space, and all the Ais are distinct points, then again the existence of Uis is guaranteed, so we have the isomorphism.
